Everything you need to know about Acrow props size 2: (1.98m - 3.35m) hire
Description
Size 2 acrow prop hire
Same tool as Size 1: a steel post with a pin and a nut that you wind under the thing you need to hold. The only difference is the tube length. Size 2 starts at 1.98m and winds to 3.35m. Size 1 dies at 3.12m.
If you do not yet know what an acrow is, or whether you need Strongboys, read Size 1 first. That page is the explainer. This page is the taller range.
When Size 2 is the right hire
Measure floor to the underside of what you are supporting. If that number is more than 3.12m and less than 3.35m, you are on the right page. Typical jobs: a high-ceiling Victorian room, a small shop, a double-height lobby, an extension that was never a 2.4m box.
If the gap is about 2.4m, go back to Size 1. Size 2 will physically stand there — it closes at 1.98m — but you are hiring extra steel you will not use.
If 3.35m still leaves you short, that is Size 3 (up to 3.96m) or Size 4 (up to 4.88m). Stairwells and commercial heights, not this prop.
Size 2 is not a stronger Size 1
The “2” is the height band. It is not a load rating. Wind any prop taller and the safe working load falls. The figure that counts is stamped on the prop we send. Partner stock varies, so we do not print a single SWL here. Load-bearing walls still need an engineer. A longer prop does not change that.
Strongboys
Unchanged from Size 1. Cutting a hole in brick or block: add Strongboys, two props minimum around a door, no more than 900mm apart. Holding joists or a beam: props only. How to stand one, sole plates, plumbing, when to take them out — Size 1.
Frequently asked questions
When do I need Size 2 instead of Size 1?
When the height you must support is above 3.12m. Size 1 stops there. Size 2 winds to 3.35m. A normal 2.4m room is Size 1. High Victorian rooms, shop units and some extensions are Size 2.
Can Size 2 still be used in a 2.4m room?
It closes at 1.98m, so it will stand in a 2.4m room. That does not make it the right hire. You are paying for extra length you do not need, and a longer prop is clumsier to plumb. Take Size 1 unless you need the extra height.
Does Size 2 work with Strongboys?
Yes. Same head, same rule: Strongboys only when you are holding brick or block above an opening. A beam or ceiling needs the prop only. How the kit works is on the Size 1 page.
Is Size 2 stronger than Size 1?
No. The number is the height range, not the load. Safe working load is stamped on the prop and it falls as you wind it taller. A Size 2 at full stretch is not a stronger Size 1.
