Acrow props size 1: (1.75m - 3.12m) hire
A Size 1 acrow is an adjustable steel post, 1.75–3.12m. You wind it under a beam, ceiling or lintel so the structure stays put while you work. Add Strongboys if the wall above the opening is brick or block.

Everything you need to know about Acrow props size 1: (1.75m - 3.12m) hire
Description
What an acrow prop is
It is a steel post you hire so something above you does not move while you work underneath it. Two tubes slide inside each other. A pin sets the rough height. A nut on the thread takes the last few millimetres and holds the load. When the new lintel, beam or ceiling is doing the job, you wind the nut off and take the props away.
That is all it is. It is not a permanent support. It does not replace a wall. If you take the props out before the new structure is in, the load comes with them.
Why this page is Size 1
Props come in numbered sizes. The number is the height range, not the strength.
Size 1 closes at 1.75m and winds out to 3.12m. A normal UK room is about 2.4m from floor to ceiling. That is why Size 1 is the one most people hire. Measure the gap you need to fill. If it is under 1.83m, use Size 0. If 3.12m still leaves you short, go Size 2 or above.
Never pick a size because it is cheaper and then wind it past the last safe thread. The load rating drops as the prop gets taller. The number that matters is stamped on the prop you are sent, not on this page — partner stock varies.
What you are holding up
A beam, joists or a soffit — the prop stands on the floor (on a sole plate) and the top plate sits under timber packing against the thing you are supporting. Props only. No Strongboy.
Brick or block above a new door or window — the prop alone cannot bite into the wall. You fit a Strongboy on top of the prop and drive the blade into a raked mortar joint above the cut. The masonry stays put while you put the lintel in. Then the lintel takes over and the props come out.
If you do not know whether the wall is load-bearing, do not open it. That is an engineer’s question, not a hire-page question.
How many, and how far apart
A single door is usually two Size 1 props minimum — one each side — plus Strongboys if the wall is masonry. Do not space Strongboy-and-prop pairs more than 900mm apart. A wide opening or a load-bearing wall needs more, laid out by someone who has calculated the load. Guessing the count from a product page is how openings drop.
How you set one
- Check the prop. Bent tube, cracked plate or a nut that will not run — reject it and we replace it.
- Put a sole plate on the floor so the base is not punching through a board.
- Stand the prop plumb. A lean turns a post into a buckle.
- Pin the inner tube at the hole below the height you need.
- Pack the top. Wind the nut until the prop is taking the load. You are holding the structure, not jacking the house up.
- Leave them in until the new lintel or beam is in and doing the work. Then wind off and we collect.
Size 1 compared with the others
- Size 0 (1.04–1.83m) — a low window head or a short drop. It will not reach a 2.4m ceiling.
- Size 1 (1.75–3.12m) — a normal room. This hire.
- Size 2 (1.98–3.35m) — a taller room where Size 1 runs out.
- Size 3 and 4 — stairwells and high spaces. Different job.
Frequently asked questions
What is an acrow prop?
A steel post you wind to the height of the thing you need to hold. Inner tube, outer tube, a pin, a nut. It is temporary. It is not a wall and it is not a lintel.
Why Size 1?
Size 1 runs 1.75m to 3.12m. A typical UK room is about 2.4m. That sits in the middle of Size 1. Size 0 stops at 1.83m and will not reach a normal ceiling.
What is a Strongboy and do I need one?
A Strongboy is a steel head that sits on the prop. You drive the blade into a mortar joint so the brick or block above an opening stays up while you fit a lintel. If you are only holding a beam or a ceiling, you do not need one. If you are cutting a hole in a masonry wall, you do.
How many Size 1 props for a door?
Usually at least two, one each side of the opening, and no more than 900mm apart if you are using
