Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license for a mini digger?

Anyone can operate a small digger on home or private sites without a licence, saving money on a driver. If you are using the plant on a construction site, you will need relevant training. You need a licence to drive any size digger on a public road.

Are diggers easy to drive and use?

Diggers are fairly easy to drive once you learn the controls and get used to the machines movements. They are versatile and highly adaptable. The ease of operation depends on the size, functions, and complexity of the device.

How do I drive an excavator?

Excavators can be surprisingly easy to operate yourself.

Read our guide ‘how to operate a mini digger’ for tips on how to feel confident.

How deep can a mini excavator dig?

Depending on the size of the excavator, they can dig depths from up to 1.7m to 6.7m.

Always check the specifications of the excavator that you’re hiring to ensure the machine you receive can reach the depths that you need it to.

What is the difference between wheeled and tracked diggers?

Wheeled diggers are faster on hard surfaces and in urban areas where you may need to travel over roads or pavement, while tracked machines are better for soft or uneven ground. Read our guide, tracked vs wheeled excavators.

What is the smallest digger you can hire?

The smallest size digger available to hire is a 0.8T diesel powered micro digger.

How much does it cost to hire a digger?

Hiring a digger can be a great option as opposed to buying one; particularly if you are a DIYer or have no where to store such a large piece of equipment.

The price to hire a digger depends on the size of the digger and the fuel that it is powered by. A 1T diesel digger  for example can cost from £291 for a days hire, whereas a 16.3T diesel digger would be £907 to hire for a day.

It can be much more cost effective to hire large equipment such as diggers for a week rather than a day, however.
