Everything you need to know about Blue Circle Mortar
Overview
What Is Blue Circle Mortar For?
Blue Circle Mortar comes in 20kg bags, listed here as the Blue Circle Mortar 20kg. A bagged mortar saves buying cement and sand separately and measuring every batch, which makes it handy for:
- Garden walls, planters and barbecues
- Small extensions of existing walls and piers
- Rebuilding a section of wall or replacing damaged bricks
- Laying blocks for sheds, bin stores and inner walls
How Many Bags Do I Need?
Assumptions: standard 215 x 102.5 x 65mm bricks and 440 x 215 x 100mm blocks with 10mm joints; about 60 bricks or 10 blocks per m² (9.88 rounded up) in a single skin wall. Published guidance from the Mineral Products Association (Mortar Data Sheet 1) puts mortar use at about 1 tonne per 1,000 bricks, or per 600 blocks of 440 x 215 x 100mm (450 x 225mm including joints). That works out at about 20 bricks or 12 blocks per 20kg bag of ready mixed mortar. Water added on mixing gives a little more than 20kg of mortar, so this errs on the side of having some spare. If the bag states its own coverage, use that. Each figure before waste is rounded up, then multiplied by 1.1 and rounded up again.
| Job | Bricks or blocks | Bags before waste | Bags with 10% added for waste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden wall 5m x 1m, half brick | 300 bricks | 15 | 17 |
| Block bin store, 100 blocks | 100 blocks | 9 (8.3 rounded up) | 10 |
| Pier, one brick square, 1m high (14 courses x 2) | 28 bricks | 2 (1.4 rounded up) | 3 |
These are general guidance figures, not measured for this product.
Bagged Mortar or Cement and Sand?
For a few hundred bricks, bags keep things simple. For a whole extension, mixing your own from cement such as Castle grey cement and building sand means far fewer bags to carry; compare the cost for your brick count.
Using Bagged Mortar
- Add clean water as the bag directs and mix to an even, workable paste.
- Mix only what you can use before it stiffens, and don't add water to mortar that has started to set.
- Don't lay bricks in frost, and cover fresh work if rain is forecast.
