Scarifying without wrecking the lawn
A lawn that looks worse straight after scarifying is completely normal, thatch and moss come out in thick, ugly ridges that need raking off and composting, but a lawn choked with thatch cannot take up water or feed properly, so this rough patch is a necessary step towards a healthier lawn a few weeks later.
Blade depth should just nick the soil surface, not gouge it. Set too shallow and the machine only skims the top of the moss, set too deep and you strip out healthy grass along with the thatch, leaving bare patches that take a full growing season to fill back in on a typical UK lawn.
September is the classic window because grass recovers fast in the remaining warm weeks, but a light scarify in spring can also help ahead of the main growing season. Whichever season, follow up with overseeding and a top-dressing, scarifying opens up bare patches that recover far quicker with fresh seed worked into them.
