How to use a cement mixer

Mixing a large amount of cement, concrete, and screed can be time consuming and labour intensive. It's best suited to small quantities and lighter jobs.

How To Use A Cement Mixer

Step 1

Set the mixer up near to where you're working. Remember you'll need space to work, and room to access the mixer with a wheelbarrow. Make sure you position the machine on firm and level ground. You can place a board underneath it to help, and this will also catch spillages.

Step 2

Pour approximately one gallon of water into the mixer. We pour the water in first to ensure the mix does not stick to the sides of the machine. Make sure that you use the correct amount of water for the cement mix, as specified in the instructions. There are various concrete mix ratios for your different jobs. If you add too much water, the cement mix will become too thin and unmanageable. If you do not add enough water to the mix, the concrete will become too thick and will not combine thoroughly. If you use the wrong proportions, the cement mix will end up in the bin.

Step 3

Open the cement mix bag from the top and pour the entire contents into the cement mixer.

Step 4

Plug the concrete mixer in and turn it on. The machine will begin mixing the powdered cement mix and water together. If you are working in an area that does not provide power outlets, you can use a generator to run your electrical equipment. Allow the mixer a few minutes to fully mix the contents. You want to ensure that there is no visible powder left. A cement mixers drum continually rotates until it is turned off so that the mixture is constantly moving. This prevents the mix from settling and drying. Leave the cement mixer running for as long as you need it to keep the contents moist and manageable.

Step 5

Turn the concrete mixer off before pouring out the contents or leaving it unaided.

Step 6

Pour the fresh cement into a wheelbarrow for easy transportation. Most cement mixers will tip and turn so you can pour the contents out with ease.

Step 7

Use a shovel to remove the cement from the wheelbarrow to wherever you need it.

Step 8

Continue to repeat all the previous steps to mix enough cement to finish the job.

Cleaning a Concrete Mixer

Any material left in the drum will harden and attract more mixture every use until it builds up and the mixer becomes unfit for use. You can use a pressure washer to jet wash the mixer after use. You can also use a mix of 1" (2½cm) gravel and clean water, load it into the drum and run the mixer. This solution will dislodge any mixture stuck to the drum, so you can then pour it out. If you use plenty of this water and gravel mixture, you can get the cleaning done really quickly. Though, do not use large stone, rocks or bricks to clean out the mixer, as this can cause damage.

If you hire the equipment, you will need to clean the concrete mixer properly before returning it. You can incur extra cleaning charges if you return the mixer dirty.
