Repairing concrete so it lasts

Sound-looking concrete right next to visible damage is often more deteriorated than it appears, tapping the surrounding area with a hammer and listening for a hollow sound helps identify the true extent of damage before repair material goes down, patching over concrete that is still delaminating underneath is a common reason repairs fail within a year.

A scabbler roughens sound concrete to give new repair material a proper mechanical key to bond to, a smooth-cut edge from a breaker or saw does not give patching mortar or resin anything to grip, which is why scabbling the repair perimeter is worth the extra step rather than skipping straight to filling.

Preparation quality decides how long a concrete repair lasts far more than the repair product itself, all loose material, dust, and laitance need to be removed and the surface should be sound and, in most cases, slightly damp before applying repair mortar, following the manufacturer's surface preparation instructions closely rather than treating it as an afterthought.
