What Is White Cement Used For?

White cement is used in place of grey cement where the colour of the finished mortar, render or concrete matters. It's listed here as the Hanson White Cement 25kg. Common uses include:

Getting a Light Colour

• Pair it with a light sand: silver sand or a pale building sand keeps mortar light, while a dark sand darkens it.
• Use clean tools, mixers and buckets, as traces of grey cement show up.
• Mix a small trial batch and let it dry fully, as wet mortar looks darker than it will dry.
• Measure every batch the same way so the colour stays even across the wall.

How Many Bags?

White cement mixes in the same ratios as grey. As general guidance, at 1:4 one 25kg bag of cement lays about 110 standard 65mm bricks. A 3m x 1m feature panel in pale brick (half brick, about 180 bricks) needs about 1.6 bags before waste, or 2 bags with 10% added for waste. Storing Cement

• Store bags off the ground on a pallet or boards, in a dry place, and keep them covered.
• Use opened bags quickly and fold the top over tightly in between.
• Lumpy cement that won't break up between your fingers has taken on moisture and shouldn't be used for structural work.
