Processing branches safely and efficiently

Domestic chippers handle branches up to roughly 50mm diameter, medium machines process up to 100mm, and professional road-towable chippers handle branches up to 150–200mm. Trying to force oversized material through an undersized feed chute is the most common cause of jams and stalls.

Safety goggles, ear protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots are essential when operating a wood chipper. Loose clothing, drawstrings, and anything that could be caught by the feed rollers must be avoided near the feed chute, most depots provide safety instructions covering safe feeding technique at handover.

Wood chip produced can be used directly as garden mulch once processed, though freshly chipped green material is best left to age for a few weeks before spreading around plants, as fresh chip can temporarily draw nitrogen from the soil as it starts to break down.
