They are often referred to as 'electric lawn rakes' and they are used for removing moss, thatch and other unwanted organic material from lawns. Once you have scarified the lawn, you should overseed the area to encourage thicker, healthier grass growth and a more full and rich lawn. You should only scarify your lawn during ideal conditions - when the weather is warm and when there is some rain. As, if you scarify the lawn in extreme weather, you could do more harm than good. If you scarify during a period of heavy rain, or extreme conditions like a drought, the lawn will not be able to recover and develop into the full, rich texture that you want.
