Certification and load charts

Compact models lift 2.5 tonnes to 6m, standard construction telehandlers lift 3–4 tonnes to 10–14m, and heavy-duty models handle 5+ tonnes to 17m or more. Capacity always drops as reach and lift height increase, this relationship is shown on the machine's load chart and should be checked against your actual job, not just the headline tonnage rating.

Operators need a CPCS or NPORS telehandler ticket (category A17 for CPCS). Some depots offer operated hire with a qualified driver included, which is worth considering for one-off jobs where training up an operator wouldn't be cost-effective.

Attachments change what the machine can do beyond simple pallet handling, forks for general materials, buckets for loose aggregate, and jibs for man-cage or crane-style lifting where permitted. LOLER requires lifting equipment and accessories to have a valid thorough examination in date, which reputable hire partners will confirm at handover.
