Stump Grinder Hire Across the UK

Removing a stump properly

Most stump grinders cut 15–30cm below ground level, which is deep enough for turf, planting, or light paving over the top. For deeper removal, for example clearing a stump entirely for building foundations, excavation is usually a better fit than grinding, which is designed to clear the visible obstruction rather than the full root system.

Stump grinders work on all species, from softwood pine to dense hardwood oak. Larger and harder stumps simply take longer to grind through rather than requiring a different machine, though a heavier, higher-powered unit will get through denser wood noticeably faster.

Always check for buried services, cables, pipes, and roots from neighbouring trees, before starting. Grinding into an unmarked service is both a safety risk and a costly mistake, and it's worth a locator check even on a garden job where you might not expect buried infrastructure.
