Setting up a compliant, functioning site

CDM 2015 places a legal duty on principal contractors to provide adequate welfare facilities before construction work starts, HSE guidance recommends at least one toilet for every 7 workers, along with a rest area and washing facilities, this is not optional even on small sites and is usually the first thing an inspector checks.

Temporary fencing needs planning before delivery, not just on the day, measure the site perimeter and account for gates and pedestrian access points, and check whether any of the fencing will encroach on a public footpath or road, which needs a licence from the local highway authority.

Sites without a mains connection need generator and lighting capacity worked out early rather than added as an afterthought, undersizing a generator causes nuisance trips as soon as multiple tools run at once, while getting lighting towers in place before the clocks change avoids losing productive hours to darkness in winter months.
