Timing and technique for cultivating soil

Small cultivators (30–40cm width) suit raised beds and borders. Medium rotavators (50–60cm) handle allotments and large gardens. Heavy-duty machines (80cm+) are needed for compacted or virgin ground that hasn't been worked before, where a smaller machine simply bounces off the surface rather than digging in.

Spring and autumn are the ideal windows for most soil types, when the ground is workable but not waterlogged. Avoid rotavating very wet or frozen ground: working wet clay in particular damages soil structure and creates compacted clumps that are harder to break down later than if you'd waited.

Making a first shallow pass and a second deeper pass gives a better tilth than trying to reach full depth in one go, particularly on ground that hasn't been cultivated recently. Removing large stones and roots before starting also reduces strain on the tines and gearbox.
