Splitting wood efficiently and safely

5–7 tonne splitters handle softwoods and smaller rounds up to around 30cm diameter without trouble. Hardwoods like oak, and larger rounds up to 50cm or more, need 10–20 tonne machines, undersized splitters on dense hardwood will stall repeatedly rather than push through the round.

Hydraulic log splitters are significantly safer than manual splitting with an axe or maul. They require no overhead swing, most operate with two-hand controls that prevent the ram from cycling unless both hands are clear, and the risk of a glancing axe blow is removed entirely.

Freshly felled (green) wood splits more easily than fully seasoned wood in some species but is heavier to handle and won't be ready to burn for many months. Splitting before seasoning, rather than after, generally makes the drying process faster since more surface area is exposed to air.
