What is the difference between 110v & 240v power tools?
The main difference between 110v and 240v electric power tools is the voltage levels that run them. There is no difference in the power or function of 110v and 240v tools. They work in the same way and offer the same output. The main reason we have a difference is health and safety, and the wellbeing of workers.
When should I use a 110v power tool vs using a 240v tool?
240v tools are compatible with domestic plug sockets, while 110v tools are mainly for professionals and trades when working on site. So if you're doing some home DIY, you should opt for the 240v version of the power tool. If you're working on a building site, you'll need a 110v tool.
Why is a 110v power tool better for use on-site?
Using 110v equipment on-site is safer as the risk of harm in the event of an accident is reduced. On-site, we generally use isolating transformers to provide two 55v lines out of phase. This means that you can connect 110v tools to them, and if a cable is cut or damaged, the voltage is halved, and the shock is less likely to be fatal. 110v is a requirement on most sites, and 240v tools are not allowed due to health and safety. Check with the site manager to find out the rules of your specific site and what they allow.
You can plug a 240v to 110v transformer into a standard 240v pocket socket. The transformer drops the voltage down to 110v, so it is safer. This also means you don't have to use circuit breakers.
Can I use a 110v power tool for DIY at home?
If a power tool is not available in 240v, you can still use it at home for DIY purposes. But, you will also need to hire a transformer to convert the voltage to 240v.
