Sanding a floor without professional experience

Modern drum sanders are designed for DIY use, but the technique matters: start with a coarse grit to strip the old finish and level the boards, then work through medium and fine grits, always sanding with the grain and keeping the machine moving to avoid gouging.

Edge sanders and detail sanders handle the areas a drum sander physically can't reach, skirting boards, corners, and around fitted units, and should be run to the same grit progression as the main floor so the finish matches once sealed.

Sand between coats of finish with a fine grit to remove raised grain and dust nibs, and allow the manufacturer's recommended curing time before moving furniture back. Rushing this step is the most common cause of a patchy or damaged final finish.
