Keeping dust exposure under control
HSE workplace exposure limits for respirable crystalline silica are low enough that even a single day of dry cutting or grinding without extraction can breach them, which is why on-tool extraction paired with an M-class unit has become standard practice rather than a nice-to-have on most commercial sites.
M-class is the practical minimum for general building dust, but H-class extraction is needed where there is any possibility of hazardous material, for example when working on refurbishments where older paints or coatings might be present. If you are unsure which class applies, treat the job as higher risk and step up rather than down.
Filter condition affects suction far more than motor power once a unit has been in use for a few hours, so knocking the filter clean or fitting a fresh one partway through a long grinding or sanding job keeps extraction effective rather than letting visible dust build up in the room as the filter clogs.
