Drying a building out properly

Small units (10–20 litres/day) suit single rooms after a minor leak. Industrial dehumidifiers (50–170 litres/day) are needed for flood damage, new-build drying, and larger commercial spaces where the volume of moisture is far greater than a domestic unit can handle.

Drying time varies enormously by cause: a single room after a minor leak might take 2–3 days, while post-flood or after wet plastering can take 1–3 weeks depending on how saturated the structure is. Running an industrial unit continuously, with doors and windows closed to keep the drying air circulating rather than escaping, significantly cuts the total time.

Refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers lose efficiency below about 5°C, so in cold, unheated buildings a desiccant unit, or a heater run alongside a refrigerant unit, will dry the space faster than the dehumidifier working alone.
