Cutting cable safely and cleanly

Always test with a voltage detector immediately before cutting, even a cable that has been isolated at the board can still carry a charge or be mislabelled, and this single check is what separates a routine cable cut from a serious safety incident.

Hydraulic cutters make short work of armoured and steel wire cable that would take significant effort with a ratchet cutter, and they leave a cleaner, flatter cut face than side cutters or bolt croppers, which matters when you need to terminate the cable afterwards rather than just remove a section.

A single-action cutting head that shears cleanly through all the conductors at once is preferable to a tool that crushes or deforms the cable before it separates, deformed conductors are harder to strip cleanly and can leave stray strands that cause a poor connection at the termination.
