Description
Working Out Your Bags
This is a single 20kg bag of pre blended sand cement mortar, listed on the sand cement mortar page. Use the table to plan the number of bags for your job.
Assumptions: standard 215 x 102.5 x 65mm bricks and 440 x 215 x 100mm blocks with 10mm joints; about 60 bricks or 10 blocks per m² (9.88 rounded up) in a single skin wall. Published guidance from the Mineral Products Association (Mortar Data Sheet 1) puts mortar use at about 1 tonne per 1,000 bricks, or per 600 blocks of 440 x 215 x 100mm (450 x 225mm including joints). That works out at about 20 bricks or 12 blocks per 20kg bag of ready mixed mortar. Water added on mixing gives a little more than 20kg of mortar, so this errs on the side of having some spare. If the bag states its own coverage, use that. Each figure before waste is rounded up, then multiplied by 1.1 and rounded up again.

For repointing, the amount depends on joint depth, so start with one or two bags and check how far each goes. These are general guidance figures, not measured for this product.
Repointing With Bagged Mortar
- Rake old joints out to a firm, even depth and brush out the dust.
- Dampen the wall lightly so it doesn't pull water from the new mortar too fast.
- Press mortar in firmly, then finish the joints to match the rest of the wall once it has firmed up.
- Brush off crumbs once dry rather than smearing wet mortar across brick faces.
