What Is Paving Sand For?

Kiln dried paving sand is the fine, dry sand brushed into the joints between block pavers and patio slabs once they're laid. It fills the gaps, locks the blocks together so they don't shift, and helps stop weeds getting a foothold. It's a finishing material: the bedding layer under block paving is normally sharp sand, laid over a compacted sub base.

How Do I Use It?

• Make sure the paving and the sand are dry, so the sand flows right down into the joints.
• Spread it over the surface and brush it diagonally across the joints with a soft brush.
• On block paving, run a plate compactor fitted with a protective pad over the surface, then brush in more sand and repeat until the joints stay full.
• Sweep off the excess. Top up the joints after a few weeks as the sand settles.

How Much Do I Need?

It depends on the joint width and the depth of the pavers: narrow joints between blocks take far less than wide joints between slabs. As general guidance, kiln dried jointing sand for standard block paving usually goes a few square metres per 20kg bag. Buy a bag or two more than you think: joints settle and need topping up.
