Everything you need to know about MOT Type 1 Sub Base
Overview
What Is MOT Type 1 Sub Base?
MOT Type 1 is a crushed stone sub base: a mix of stone and fines that locks together when compacted into a hard, load bearing layer with very few voids. It's the layer that goes down first, under asphalt, concrete, block paving, slabs or gravel, so the surface on top stays level and doesn't sink. It's a natural material, so its colour and texture vary with the source. You can buy it two ways:
| Pack | Size | Lead time shown |
|---|---|---|
| MOT Type 1 Sub Base 25kg Mini Bag | 25kg | 1 day |
| MOT Type 1 Sub Base Bulk Bag | 800kg (packed weight 800kg, plus or minus 5%) | 1 day |
How Deep Should Type 1 Be?
- Paths: about 75mm to 100mm compacted.
- Patios and shed bases: about 100mm compacted.
- Driveways: about 150mm compacted, and more on soft clay.
Lay it in layers of no more than about 100mm and compact each one with a plate compactor before adding the next.
How Much MOT Type 1 Do I Need?
Multiply the area by the compacted depth to get cubic metres. As a general guide, compacted Type 1 weighs about 2 tonnes per m³, so:
| Compacted depth | One 800kg bulk bag covers | 25kg bags per m² |
|---|---|---|
| 75mm | about 5.3m² | 6 |
| 100mm | about 4m² | 8 |
| 150mm | about 2.7m² | 12 |
For example, a 3m by 2.4m shed base (7.2m²) at 100mm is 0.72m³, about 1.44 tonnes. Add around 10% and that's about 1.6 tonnes: two bulk bags. A 3m by 6m driveway at 150mm needs about 5.4 tonnes before waste, or eight bulk bags once you add 10%. These are general figures for compacted Type 1, not measured for this listing.
How to Lay a Type 1 Sub Base
- Dig out to the depth of the sub base plus the bedding and surface on top, and remove soft spots and roots.
- On soft or clay ground, lay a geotextile membrane so the stone doesn't sink into the soil.
- Spread the Type 1 in layers, dampening it lightly if it's very dry, and compact each layer with a plate compactor.
- Check levels and falls with a string line so water runs away from buildings.
- Finish with a bedding layer: 6mm grano dust under artificial grass, or sharp sand under block paving.
Bag or Bulk Bag?
25kg bags suit small shed bases, path repairs and gardens with no room for a bulk bag, as they carry through a house or down a side passage. Past about 30 bags, one 800kg bulk bag (thirty two bags' worth) is the simpler buy, as long as it can be placed on firm ground close to the job.
