Matching pump type to the water matters more than raw power, a submersible pump handles clean or lightly silted standing water well, but a diaphragm pump copes far better with muddy, debris-laden excavation water that would clog a standard centrifugal pump within minutes.

Flow rate needs sizing to the actual volume of water arriving, not just the volume already there, a spring-fed excavation or a trench near a water table can refill faster than a small pump can keep up with, so oversizing slightly is usually cheaper than a site standing idle waiting for water to clear.

Discharge point matters as much as the pump itself, pumping straight into a surface water drain without checking local rules can breach environmental regulations if the water is silty or contains fuel residue, settlement tanks or filter bags are worth arranging on larger dewatering jobs.
